THE ORIGIN STORY
On the foothills of Mt.Elgon, the best coffee grows near the top of ridges that jut above deep valleys. Gibuzaale is a micro-region within Buginyanya, which is one of the highest of these narrow plateaus. Coffee from all the way up to the park border finds its way down to the Gibuzaale Washing Station where day lots are traceable down to the individual farmer or lot!
Year by year, both yields and qualities have been on the rise. In part this is because specialty has started to embrace Ugandan coffee, whereas before it was sold solely on value. This improvement can be credited to competent partners investing heavily in technology, lot separation, training and quality – making Gibuzaale Washing station an outpost of organized coffee buying on a mountain full of individual smallholders.
This coffee is made up of the prized SL-14 and SL-28 varietals, but with completely different cup characteristics you usually find from these varietals in a Kenyan coffee. We get notes of grapefruit and ginger, and find that the flavors are best highlighted by an Aeropress or V-60.
